About Garrett

Garrett, an American company, has been known as a leading developer of different types of metal detectors in the world market since 1964. A graduate engineer Charles L. Garrett became the company’s Founding Father. Since early childhood he had been keen on searching for ancient coins as well as all sorts of lost things with a metal detector. But imperfections in the metal detector of the day spurred him to make improvements to it and perhaps even to develop his own device. In 1964 Charles L. Garrett developed his first ground search metal detector. One year after, he produced as many as 25 devices of that kind.

In 1982 the company started working on the first security hand scanner metal detector before the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. In 1984 Ed Best, the Head of Security at the Olympics, appeared at Garrett’s office to test a new metal detector. Having thoroughly tested the Magnascanner (the first walk-through metal detector), Best ordered 60 walk-through and 120 hand-held metal detectors. Two weeks after they had been in use, the company became a huge success. Since then, it has become the dominant supplier of metal detectors for security services to the most summer and winter Olympics.

Additionally, Garrett offers the practical guides to setting up security checkpoints with the Garrett metal detectors to be used; as well as a comprehensive training program, thanks to which customers and dealers learn how to install, calibrate and operate the Garrett metal detectors.

The Academy is one of several resources offered by the company to improve education. Since the company’s founding, Charles L. Garrett had written several books about the art of treasure hunting and created numerous video tutorials on how to use the Garrett metal detectors.

Today Garrett is a leading global manufacturer of metal detecting equipment. The company’s products cover a wide range of ground search metal detectors of different difficulty level and security hand-held devices.

The Garrett metal detectors have a reputation for high reliability – the very thing the company’s Founder and President Charles L. Garrett had always aimed at.

“My wife Eleanor and I determined early in our company’s development that we would build the best metal detectors and provide the best customer service the industry had ever seen. Those were our standards then and continue to be our standards now”.

Continuous work on new products and improvements to existing ones, along with strong customer support, help the company to constantly develop the ground and security metal detector lines.

In 2015 Charles L. Garrett passed away. His son Vaughan has continued the business.
