Viking sword found in Iceland (photo+)

One of the cases of finding a Viking sword in 2016 relates to the island state of Iceland. A company of wild goose hunters accidentally discovered this artifact right on the surface of the earth. Surprisingly, the object was most likely washed ashore during a storm or washed out of the ground.

Arni Björn Valdimarsson, who found the sword, posted this photo of the sword on Facebook, after which Icelandic officials from the cultural heritage agency contacted him.

The sword dates back to around the 10th century. Archaeologists suggest a pagan Viking burial site at the discovery site, which will still need to be proven. Swords like this are not such a common find in Iceland. There are a total of 23 known cases of Viking Age swords being found.
