For advanced comrades, it is no secret that Swedish coins in the XVI — In the 17th centuries, coins were actively minted not only in Sweden itself, but also in the Baltic cities. Narva was under Swedish rule from 1581 to 1704. At the beginning of this period, there was a shortage of Swedish coins in the city, so in 1663 Narva was granted the unique right to mint its own coins. The Swedish coins of Narva minting known to numismatists date back to 1670-1672 during the reign of Charles XI.
Coins minted in Narva can be easily identified externally by the city’s coat of arms on the reverse. The coat of arms depicts (from top to bottom): a sword, two cannonballs, two fish (graylings), a sword and a separate cannonball at the very bottom. This coat of arms was granted to the city of Narva by the Swedish king Johan III in 1585.
Example of a four Öre coin. Legend on the obverse — «DOMINVS • PROTECTOR • MEVS» (Latin: The Lord is my protector), on the reverse — «MON : ARG : CIV : NARVA : 1670», respectively means that this silver coin was minted in the city of Narva in 1670.
