Are additional coils needed for a metal detector? (Experience of using Nel Sharpshooter)

I’ve probably been struggling with this question for a year now — Do you need to take additional coils for your device? There is a standard one, you can easily get by with one, and the attitude towards additional coils is very suspicious — they will do who knows what and who knows where, and then take the device for repair or replacement under warranty. However, the prospect of coming to a broken field and leaving this field with nothing (when using a standard coil) makes you think about buying a large coil («steering wheel», so to speak), or a replacement for the standard one. Mass production does not always give the best quality product. 😉

A friend sent me his impressions of using an additional reel, fortunately he was the only one among my acquaintances who took an additional reel, and a very ordinary one at that. I almost kept the spelling and punctuation in the original:

On occasion, I bought a used Nel sarpshooter reel, the price was good and I thought it would be suitable for household use, at the same time I was very interested in what kind of sniper it was and what it was used with. Of course, before purchasing, I read the comments on the Internet and concluded that the reel is not very bad, but there are so many people, so many opinions, and until you try it yourself, you still won’t have your own opinion. When selling, the former owner scared me a little that the coil has a character, that it is necessary to additionally very firmly secure the cable from it to the rod, remove the sensitivity on ICQ minus two sticks, otherwise there will be a lot of phantom signals and that in general the coil is complex, and you need to get used to it.

Arriving home, I couldn’t wait to test my new reel and, having removed the standard reel from my ICQ, I put on the new one and went to test it in an abandoned sandbox near the house — in it I carry out all the experiments with the device, accordingly, as I thought, I had knocked it out completely and what was my surprise when a Soviet penny jumped out of it, coins are found and this is already pleasing, but my goal was how it would behave in littered place. I switched to the lawn and what was immediately surprising was that there were practically no phantom signals from the rather tall grass and a cacophony of iridescent sounds, as on a standard coil in such conditions with the maximum sensitivity set, which was pleasantly surprising because with a standard coil I could only walk on freshly plowed fields and along paths. Since it is difficult in the summer to know in advance which field the search will take place: plowed or mowed, I decided that this was a good universal option. And so it turned out: excellent detection depth and very clear metal discrimination with this coil made the search easier, with less time spent determining what lies under the coil.

And another interesting point: you can safely remove iron segments without fear that something will be missed, because if there is a signal, then it is definitely a color signal and only you can decide what it is: foil or, for example, a can. This summer I decided to go with the Nel sharpshooter as my main reel, since I don’t see any disadvantages compared to the standard one, only advantages, and of course the size of the reel and weight are also a very nice bonus.

As you can see, the owner of the reel decided to keep the appearance of the reel in the most presentable form and simply wrapped the entire reel with dark electrical tape. I’ve already seen something like this somewhere, and yes, for sure, there was also collective farm on Garrett. In any case, the detector’s owner’s coil was not short of finds, and we wish him good luck in this regard. 😉

And what coils do other comrades choose? I keep thinking about the steering wheel, but should I take the steering wheel from Nel or Mars? Or maybe Detech or Coiltek? Let’s see! I collect all the information on the Nel Sharpshooter reel here.
