After all, we honestly wrote in the channel description that one of our topics is equipment reviews. And what? Honest and truthful. Therefore, I, as a digger, who for almost a year denied the need for a pinpointer, can, after many years, just as objectively tell what exactly this device gives to a digger during and during the digging process itself.
Dry hands. Spring, the first trips to the cops, and utter muck in every hole. But the signal is good and comes from somewhere deep. What to do? Digging a pit so as not to inadvertently catch something very valuable with a shovel? Or pick up the pin, especially if it is waterproof, and rummage around in the hole, clarify the side of the signal, and then dig it out in one go.
That’s exactly how I once decided that I’d stop messing around in clayey liquid mucus and need to buy a pinpointer. Then, more than once, I read comments like, “Why is this pin needed??? I like to move the soil with my hands, it’s more pleasant and reliable.” Well, I don’t know, maybe someone likes to pick wet soil with damp hands, or walk around in rubber gloves all day. But, I prefer to use a pinpointer for this.
Grass roots. Often, especially in spring, you have to dig through dead grass. If this is a meadow, or a field that has not been plowed for a long time, then the roots of the grass can go as far as half a shovel. And, in this case, how to look for a find??? Especially if it's scales??? Tear the lump into pieces and shine the light on the reel piece by piece? I tried it, to do this you need to have the hands of a truck driver. This procedure is a waste of time, nerves and effort. And combined with wet mud, it adds a lot of inconvenience.
It’s a special “pleasure” to look for scales if they have fallen from your hands into dry grass. I’m talking about those who like to move the soil around the reel with their hands. I found it with a kick or two, but without it the digger looks like that monkey with a digging stick.
Correct identification of a deep target in a hole. After I purchased the XP ORX metal detector, I have to dig twice as much. There are a lot of targets at depths greater than a spade bayonet. At the same time, it is often difficult to determine the centering of the signal due to a weak signal. When this happens, so as not to hit the find with a shovel, I first check the hole, where and from which side the signal is coming. It happened several times already that the signals were from the bottom of the hole and the coins were dug up from a depth greater than a bayonet.
A pinpointer is also indispensable when digging in the forest. Very often a good signal breaks through from under the roots of forest growth. Chopping roots with a shovel? A difficult option, you can accidentally cut a good cross or ring. So I work as a pin. I dig on the side of the signal, find a hearth and dig it out of the sand with my hands. This happened more than once; a good cross went into my collection.
You can dig with young children. I have a friend whose wife lets him go from the dacha to dig only on the condition that he takes his daughter with him. My daughter is 7 years old, and she really enjoyed walking with her dad when he gave his daughter a pinpointer. Now they have a co-op mode. Dad with a metal detector finds and digs it up, daughter finds it with a pin and sorts it into a bag. Garbage separately, coins in the swag bin.
