Golden Mask 4 PRO S is a standard design for any metal detector of this company – the standard Golden Mask rod, which has already proven itself well, because this rod is durable, does not break on the mine, but at the same time is quite comfortable, with good balance and helps fold the metal detector so compactly that you are even surprised and ask yourself why other companies don’t make similar foldable and convenient rods?
Indeed, the rod folds so compactly that the metal detector and coil assembly can be folded and placed in a standard 60-liter backpack from the Bundeswehr, you know the one? Durable and indestructible, a digger's best friend.
The location of the battery compartment under the armrest also helps to ensure a good balance of the metal detector. The speaker is also located there, and therefore using a cover for the battery compartment is simply necessary! The metal detector runs on 10 AA batteries, the batteries were included with the charger – and this is another bonus, friends!
There is also an SP/WS button on the battery compartment; if you have a model with wireless headphones, you can use this button to turn on the speaker or connect headphones. Simply and easily!
When unfolded, the metal detector is quite long and, with my height of 194 cm, it was not difficult for me to adjust the length of the rod for a comfortable search. Sometimes it happens that the length of the rod is a little short, and then you won’t be able to walk around for a long time with such a metal detector. There are no such problems with Mask 4 PRO.
The weight of the device is only 1.4 kg, including batteries.
The key feature of this modification, as already mentioned, is the coil – the standard Detech SEF 10×12. It's a pretty good reel to use as a stock reel, and it doesn't add much to the cost of the kit. At least this choice will be better than the usual standard one.
The armrest is also large and comfortable, durable enough not to break when wearing a jacket in winter. A big plus for any metal detector.
The holding handle is also comfortable, does not slip, allows you to firmly hold the metal detector and your palm does not go numb when you swing the “stick” for the fourth hour in a row.
The operating frequency of the metal detector is 18 kHz, which means that it is more designed for searching for medium and small coins and jewelry. We conducted a test – the results are below.
Metal detector settings
The metal detector is very simple, it is not for nothing that it is nicknamed “Kalashnikov” in the world of metal detectors.
The on/off and volume button is located in the lower right corner. Then ground balance in the lower left corner. Between them there are two toggle switches – on the left: switching the ground balance mode (automatic or manual), on the right: selecting the discrimination mode (audio or multi-tone, also known as two-tone discrimination). Top row of potentiometers, from left to right: sensitivity adjustment (also known as threshold tone adjustment), sound frequency, discrimination level.
There is also a small light – an indicator of low battery level. It will light up when the batteries are almost empty, so keep an eye on it!
Regarding the settings and control of the metal detector: the first thing you need to do when you arrive at the detector is to turn on the device, then set the sensitivity to maximum and perform ground balancing, then the sensitivity can be lowered for a more or less stable level of operation of the metal detector, and the discrimination mode can be set to your choice – either between 1/2, or between 0/1, depending on who you like. I always wear multi-tone and these settings suit me quite well.
Setting the sound frequency does not affect anything; you simply adjust the response frequency of the metal detector to your liking. I was satisfied with option 5, some like 1, some like 9. There is no difference, this does not affect the depth and search characteristics of the metal detector.
Depth test
In the photo above you can see two targets – these are scales and an Ancient Roman denarius. We buried these two targets in the ground and checked the response of the metal detector. Watch the video:
The test itself starts at 7:25.
The result of the test: the device consistently sees the denarius at a depth of 25 cm, no problems, it takes it from the aisle. We think that it will work at 28 cm, but at 30 or 32 cm this is already a question, in principle, in the spring it will be possible to check this.

Depth test at the range! The targets are 5 kopecks of the USSR from 1983, 5 kopecks of Catherine the Great, 5 kopecks of Nicholas II, scales of Peter the Great, Deng of the 1730s and 2 kopecks of Alexander I.
The device passed the test site perfectly, on par with more expensive metal detectors.
Scales: things are more complicated here. The target itself is quite small and thin, and therefore will be easily missed by many metal detectors in this price range (around 300 euros) even at a depth of 5 cm. The Golden Mask 4 PRO saw this target consistently at 15 cm, at 17 cm the signal already began to disappear, with a tint of black, it caught in one direction, then in two, in general, it was unstable. As a result, we can say that the scales of the Golden Mask 4 PRO worked perfectly, 15 cm is the threshold for determining the scales where the metal detector moves from the category of clubs for beginners to more or less the major league of devices with which you can dig at rather complex small targets. So 4 PRO has justified itself in this regard – with it you can go looking not only for small coins and jewelry, but also for small metal plastic and domongol, as many people love.
Summary of the Golden Mask 4 PRO S metal detector
The decision will be clear – the device is suitable for recommending to comrades. Yes, this is analog, it works according to the VLF scheme, has a frequency of 18 kHz, does not have a display, but its idea is different – dig everything, my friend, and collect even the smallest coins where the guys with slow devices with displays simply did not pick them up.
It is especially good to use a metal detector in the forest and in places where there were villages, tracts, plowed villages, for example. In such places you need to dig for every signal and a device with a particularly fast response, like the Mask 4 PRO, will come in handy here. The response speed is simply amazing, it instantly responds to any target under the coil and can easily highlight two nearby targets with a signal.
And especially if the device comes complete with batteries and wireless headphones, and is cheaper than other tops with which it can compete, this option should not be ignored. So we recommend and recommend Mask 4 PRO, you need to take a closer look at it, the device will show itself on the good side if you work on small goals and are not lazy to dig, which means you will be rewarded for your work!
