Magic Lab – everything about reels from a Russian manufacturer!
Not long ago, all treasure hunters in Russia learned about the emergence of a new manufacturer of search coils – the Magic Lab company. What’s interesting is that even though the company was founded in 2013, reels began to appear on sale steadily since 2017. Making a coil is much more difficult than simply making a metal detector board, which can be ordered from any company that has the appropriate equipment.
What is remarkable about the Magic Lab company? Let's start with the fact that all production and development are located in Russia and, no matter what anyone says, in Russia they know how to make high-tech equipment in very narrow areas and areas. Russia has one of the best defense industries in the world, optical production, and now also the production of coils. That is, with “Magic” you don’t have to worry that a company from abroad is sponsored; on the contrary, a domestic manufacturer is supported.
Due to the fact that production is located in Russia, the price of coils is not subject to changes in the exchange rate. How often does this happen – the dollar becomes more expensive, and all the equipment follows it, but this is a logical process: all purchases come from abroad, but no one wants to pay in rubles, they only accept dollars. In this case, with the “Magics” everything is simple and in rubles.
The service center is located in the city of Zelenograd, Moscow region, which means a broken coil or wire can be replaced quickly and without problems. So far there have been no complaints about the quality, everything works quite well, whoever uses the coils – write your impressions in the comments, it will be useful for all comrades to know the truth!
Coils are produced for all popular models of metal detectors, including the Minelab X-Terra with different frequencies. A dual-frequency coil is planned to be released soon – great news for all Terok fans!
The main issue that concerns all reels is depth. According to our research and tests, it became clear that the depth of the coil is noticeably superior to the coils from DeTech, with Mars more or less on the same level, although in most cases the depth turns out to be better than a similar coil from Mars MD. In terms of operating stability, the reel is at the level of more expensive competitors. These are the results of our tests and tests of comrades who exchange information with us.
Separately, it is worth mentioning about the cable – it does not tarnish in the cold, which means it will be more difficult to damage it in our climate. We don’t live in Bulgaria or Africa, our winters are cold and stable down to -30C, but we dig until the soil in the forest is dug, that is, almost until mid-January in some places.
The coils are immersed in water up to the metal detector block, you don’t have to worry about getting them wet or ruined in the water – where are the best finds now? That's right, waist-deep in water and you have to look. Each reel comes complete with a bolt and protection for the reel ears – without this set, selling reels now is shameful and disgraceful.
Just in case, let me remind you – the warranty is two years. Anything can happen in two years, depending on how each of us digs. A new metal detector can be damaged during the season, but while the warranty is valid, it will still be possible to compensate for the repair somehow. Two years is a good time.
As for the price – you yourself know that coils in rubles are very attractive and cheaper than expensive analogues.
A little about the production of coils for metal detectors in the world
Содержание статьи:
Recently, on one very popular resource dedicated to treasure hunting and metal detectors, one of the “truth fighters” claimed that the problem with Magic coils is that they are made of ABS plastic. It's interesting to see how people so far from technical knowledge can say such nonsense and not know that all the reels in the world are made of ABS plastic. Two technologies are currently used for the production of coils:
- Vacuum forming is when a sheet of plastic is heated and a powerful pump is used to “stretch” the heated plastic onto a mold.
- Injection molding is where molten plastic pellets are injected under pressure into a two-half mold.
The process is interesting, regarding the quality of workmanship there is no single leader of the two technologies, because the coils are still not subjected to such loads and tests that to always use injection molding for their production and make strong plastic, this would be redundant and useless to anyone strength with a completely inflated price.
If you look at all manufacturers of coils for metal detectors, the situation turns out like this: AKA and Mars MD coils (identical molds), Karma, 1 model of NEL coils, 1 model of Detech coils are made under pressure. The remaining NEL and Detech models are made by vacuum forming, and some models from such manufacturers as Coiltek (Coiltek itself!), Whites and other manufacturers of metal detectors are also made.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of injection molding? With injection molding, the body itself is more rigid, but it is much more difficult to apply the screen layer. The main disadvantage is the high cost of the press farm, which will require the production of a large number of coils at a low cost per product. It makes sense to use injection molding when all the nuances of design and development have been worked out, and the number of products produced is large (that’s why, for example, Detech made only the 13″ model, the most popular, with injection molding). It is more reasonable to make small quantities by molding, and compensate for the slightly lower rigidity of the reel body with a better selection of filler compound. That's what it turns out to be.
So there is a lot of empty chatter on various resources and forums, but we try to abstract ourselves and be far from all gossip and rumors, and publish only verified and real information.
Magic Lab Coil Models
At the moment, the range of reels consists of the following models:
Magic DD 13” search coils
Perhaps one of the most popular models and sizes of coils for everyday cops is 13″. Excellent for digging for coins and antiquities in fields and ancient tracts.
I myself used 13″ coils on Fisher F75 and Minelab X-Terra 705 metal detectors.
And a 13″ coil is always the best option for a further upgrade of the Aska 250 or Fisher F22-44.
At the moment, for Garrett ACE devices (250, for example) there is a special modification – HF, that is, high frequency. This coil option increases the frequency of the device to approximately 10 kHz, which allows the ICQ to achieve better sensitivity to small targets. The proof is here:
Test of the high-frequency coil on the Garrett ACE 250 metal detector:
The reel is well balanced, the weight does not pull on your hand and does not bend the rod of the device. The shape itself, a round coil, gives better detection depth than other shapes.
Search coils Magic DD 9×13″
Perhaps the second coil option for everyday digging and replacing the rod on your metal detector.
This reel is one of the new products for 2018. Provides better target separation and reliable operation of the device in littered areas.
What’s interesting is that not many manufacturers were able to crack the security system on Minelab X-Terra, but Magic is one of them. The guys from NEL could easily do this, but Detech could not. I hope that one day there will be coils for Minelab Equinox.
9×13″ means the reel is 9″ wide and 13″ long. This gives a depth slightly less than a round 13″, but you can work and search in a slightly littered field, and in the forest the choice of an ellipse coil will be more preferable than a circle coil – you can also search between trees, between bushes, where others are not looking, but the best finds may lie there.
Search coils Magic DD 5×8”
Quite an interesting design of a “semi-sniper”, let’s call it that. The 5×8″ size is new and an unusual size, but will work great for certain digging purposes.
With such a coil, it’s a good idea to search for jewelry on the beach and finish off a littered area. You can walk with it through the positions and collect horse finds that were missed by comrades with larger reels (and this happens). For example, a sniper recently finished off the dropping of Wehrmacht LOZs (identification tags) at positions. Apparently, someone was too lazy to dig for such a signal, but a pack of LOZs lay next to a large rusty blank, one comrade waved at the blank, and the other rang more closely and took the color signal.
Magic DD 5 search coils
And every search engine should have this coil. A small “hoof”, a sniper coil, for searching in trash cans. Are you looking in trash cans? So you're missing out on great finds.
Recently, a comrade picked up 5 rubles H2 (gold coin) from a trash can. Right next to the place where I was digging, but I had a large reel and didn’t go to the trash can itself. And the comrade called himself a saffron milk cap. A 5″ coil provides better target separation and reliable operation of the device in littered areas. I strongly recommend equipping yourself with a sniper – this is a new step in digging, which will bring many new finds, although not as easy as a regular walk across a field with a large coil.
And we will add all new coils from Magic Lab to this post as they appear.
Yes, if you use a Magic reel, leave your photos of your finds and just beautiful photos in the comments, all comrades will be interested to see! And it’s also useful to read and share your experience of use. No fluff!
