What is underwater metal detector

Land and coastal areas aren’t the only territories where metal detecting is possible. A huge part of the earth’s surface is covered with water that often hides no less treasure than soil. In order to have opportunity to search for valuable items of different metals under a water column, underwater metal detectors have been developed. These devices work equally well both in fresh and salt water where most ground metal detectors are useless or ineffective. The submersion depth of an underwater metal detector is 50 meters, whereas some specimens can dive a few tens of meters deeper. It is at least 10 times more than an amphibian metal detector can do. Underwater metal detectors have the same detection depth as ground devices and it depends on object size.

Most underwater metal detectors operate at a few search frequencies that allow them to find and identify valuable items in salt water. Also, in order to reduce the effect of salts on device operation, some specimens are based on pulse induction circuit (pulse induction metal detectors).

An underwater metal detector has no display and is fully tuned for search using the potentiometers. As a rule, the device has a small number of adjustable parameters to operate underwater – sensitivity, threshold, ground balance, volume, discrimination. An underwater detector generally has successive discrimination and sound indication of a detected target. Most detectors for underwater search come with waterproof headphones.

Underwater metal detectors are engineered to operate with both mono and DD coils. The possibility of replacing a standard search coil with another one isn’t provided for some detector models.

Although a device is designed to operate underwater, it can also be used effectively for land beach search.
