What kind of metal detector do you have? I want the same one for myself

Good mood to you, dear readers of our blog.

Today I want to tell you a story that happened this summer. So, at first it was an ordinary meeting with a comrade on the field. So ordinary that it is unlikely that even with good photos and a small colorful description it would be possible to write something worthwhile for the blog. However, a somewhat unexpected continuation with the development of the plot, I think will be worthy of your attention.

Last summer, almost every day I went out for evening patrols in a field near our village. The place turned out to be swag, and even the field was fallow all summer, which means it was disked once every three weeks. This place attracted not only me, but also many other diggers. Yes, where did so many people come from??? 10 people a day, a weekday, could be found on this field. Car numbers, both local and capital, model range – from a foreign car rattling with all its components with 30 years of experience, to loose jeeps with chrome body kits.

The people were different, some wanted to communicate, some passed by unnoticed, but still, somehow, over the course of a month, a certain social circle emerged, especially among those who settled in our area with their families for self-isolation. And now I’ll tell you about one such acquaintance.

As it turns out, a well-trodden field can bring surprises. Namely, I found a bag of scales not just at the edge of the field, but at the place where most of the comrades start digging in the field. That is, the open bag of scales was where every day for a month three or four diggers passed from MD. We went back and forth.

So, on the second or third trip, I go and dig for that same wallet. I see a man walking nearby and looking around at me. He’s considering whether I’ll be happy to communicate or not? I am an open person, so I went to the meeting myself. They said hello, and then I immediately received a question.

“Listen, don’t you know how to set up this device? Otherwise, I’m walking around, I don’t understand anything, something is beeping, and it’s not clear what it is.”

Well, I think another newcomer to the field. They will buy instruments and expect that they will dig for treasures, two pieces a day. We talked, it turned out a little differently. Male age 50+, average height, thin build. He works in his law office, and because of the pandemic he went into self-isolation; in our village he has a house as a summer cottage. So, he moved and now works remotely. On the third day of idleness (remote work), I decided to do something. It turned out that there was a Turka 705 metal detector at the dacha, which my son left behind. So my interlocutor decided to try what it was. The case turned out to be interesting and he was really drawn in, but he just couldn’t figure out what and how to set up this metal detector.

It happens, everything requires experience. I advised the comrade to act wisely and google the typical request “favorite settings of the X-Terra 705”, so the comrade did so by hanging in the field for about thirty minutes with a smartphone in one hand and a metal detector in the other. It seems like I figured out the device and went digging. But he doesn’t go far from me, he watches how and what I do.

A little time passed and it was already getting dark, it was time to get ready for home, let’s go to the cars. As usual with the question “who found what???” I took the swag bag out of my bag and showed this result.

Admiration, surprise, wow!!! And then the comrade, thoughtfully, asks the same question. “I want a metal detector like yours. What is yours called? Without any snobbery, I tried to explain that his metal detector is good, and the difference in results is just an indicator of experience. But my interlocutor was adamant, I want the same metal detector as yours and that’s it. I tell him that ORX, a device that is not cheap, costs 50,000 rubles when fully equipped, to which the comrade didn’t even raise an eyebrow. For him it was not a burdensome amount of money. Okay, I wrote him the name on a piece of paper and advised him to take it straight away with headphones.

We parted ways with him. About a month passed after that and the comrade called me from the store. Once again I asked the question what my MD is called. And he clearly answered that yes, that’s exactly what he came to buy. And then, another month later, I met that comrade in another plowed field. The comrade was holding a brand new Vanquish 540 in his hands, and as I approached, I heard the same eternal question: “Listen, don’t you know how to set up this device? Otherwise, I’m walking around, I don’t understand anything, something is beeping, and it’s not clear what it is.”

I smiled good-naturedly in response and didn’t even ask the question why he still bought this particular device, and not the one he originally wanted. Here, in fact, the excellent work of the seller in the store was visible. The seller followed the logic that it is better to first buy a simpler device, figure out the hobby (whether a cop will come in or not), and then you can look at the most expensive models. Honestly though. This seller could easily lead the buyer to the fact that he just needs a device for 100 rubles. And the client would buy it.

I have a story of one comrade whose boss gave him a Minelab E-Trac for his anniversary. It went something like this. The director of a large company enters a metal detector store and asks the question from the doorway: “Tell me, what is the best metal detector you have???” And there the seller did not save at all.

This is the story. Thank you for attention. Like if you liked the note and subscribe to our channel.
