German helmets (detection of finds)

One of the most significant finds from the war is undoubtedly a German helmet. Of course, depending on the condition and availability of decals. The sample in the photo above is undeniably a shock only because of that SS decal on the right side.

A connoisseur of this bottomless topic can talk for a long time about the inexhaustible number of design options, decals, etc., also taking a bunch of samples from the First World War. However, in the spaces of the former Soviet-German front of 1941-1945, you most often come across three main versions of steel helmets of German troops — samples of 1935, 1940 and 1942. They are often designated in the Western manner as M35, M40 and M42, respectively.

There are not many main visual differences. In conditions of total war, production was simplified, which also affected helmets. The 1935 model differs from the 1940 model in that the earlier model has a separate part for the vent, and the 1942 model helmets do not have rolled edges at all. It’s easier to compare using photos. The helmets are presented in chronological order, from left to right.

Such wonderful preservation is found only in antique shops and in the private collections of wealthy moneybags; they cost several thousand dollars per helmet. It is almost impossible to find one in the attic, much less in the ground. Like many World War II artifacts made of iron, they are quite common, but preserved — tears! Exactly like in this photo.

Such junk is of little use, but nevertheless, even they are collected and put up at auctions. I usually drop a few tears on them and hang them on a bush. 🙂

If you find a rusty helmet with strong iron, without through fistulas and cracks, then it can be restored, aged and placed on a shelf where it will take its rightful place. In three words, the technology is simple: strip down to bare metal, putty, level, prime and paint. This is in theory, but in reality it is a little more complicated. The leather balaclava, strap and fasteners (clasps) can be ordered brand new on the Internet. There is a lot of hassle, but an item found with your own hands will be returned almost to its original condition. Of course, the evenness of the handles and the place where they grow play a role 😉
